This season’s must-have item is the relaxed blazer – structured enough for work, but fun and easy enough for free time. While a timeless black blazer is always something you should have in your closet, we’re even more excited about brights and pastels this season – check out all the fabulous color options we have on the line for summer. Finding the perfect pair of jeans is an experience that delivers the same amount of fulfillment as reaching nirvana…okay, not quite – but close. So many things can go wrong when shopping for denim – the jean’s shape might be too tight or too loose, the finishing may be too overdone, or the jeans can look great but feel horribly uncomfortable. That’s where Karen Kane comes in. We’ve developed what we think is the perfect pair of jeans – and every woman who’s tried them on seems to agree!

Karen Kane's Knit Band Boot Cut Jean in the May 2012 issue of More Magazine

More Magazine recently featured our knit band boot cut jeans in their May 2012 issue, as their #1 pick for denim that flatters every body shape. Their favorite element of the jeans is the signature elastic waistband, which smoothes out the waistline and create a figure-flattering silhouette. Several other Karen Kane jeans come equipped with this same feature – some of our bestselling favorites are the dark rinse jegging and capri jegging. In plus size, we offer the popular denim legging and capri jegging, both of which offer the same fabulous fit.

Whichever style and silhouette is your favorite, these specially designed jeans are sure to provide a comfortable and flattering fit!

Over the past two years, Karen Kane has made it a priority to try to manufacture as much of our product as possible domestically in the United States. In some cases, it is impossible (such as sweaters — this industry has completely gone offshores), but in many cases, we’ve been able to produce the items we used to make overseas in Southern California instead. Besides the improved quality of our products and the ability to make sure items are produced to our standards, it’s also given us a great amount of pride to see the growing resurgence of apparel manufacturing in Los Angeles and the United States in general. Customers have told us how much they like seeing the “Made in USA” tag on their new clothes, and it’s been an honor to be able to add that to most of our clothing (for Spring 2012, over 85% of our collection was made in the USA).

As many people have noticed, we are just the start of a growing trend — Inc Magazine, Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, ABC News, Bloomberg Television, and the Los Angeles Business Journal have all cited us as one of the leaders in the “Made in USA” movement. The White House caught on this year, and invited Karen Kane to attend an “Insourcing American Jobs” panel hosted by President Obama and Vice President Biden. It’s been an exciting year for us, and it’s only just begun. Check out some of the images from our manufacturing facility in Los Angeles — you may recognize some of the prints and colors in stores now!

If you’re a regular shopper on KarenKane.com, then you’re likely to recognize this smiling face:

Kristen has modeled for Karen Kane since last fall, helping us show off each collection’s newest styles. It’s not easy work — photographing an entire season’s worth of items (sometimes more than 200 outfits), takes more than a full week to shoot and requires long, 10+ hour days. Thankfully, Kristen is a professional and the shoots tend to fly by when you’re having fun. :)

If you recognize Kristen, it’s for a very good reason! In 2009, this North Carolina native won the title of Miss USA. Afterwards, she moved to Los Angeles and has been working on her acting and modeling career ever since. We caught up with Kristen to ask her what she likes about modeling for Karen Kane and what she misses about home.

How did you get into modeling?

I was around 5 years old when my younger sisters and I were in a store with my mom. A modeling agent approached us and told my mom that the 3 of us needed to be modeling. We went in to meet with the agency and they instructed us on how to get comp cards made and the process began!

What was it like to win Miss USA?

It was a childhood dream! I literally dreamed of being Miss USA my whole life. I watched every year, predicted my winners, studied their bios, watched their interviews and was inspired by all of them. To me, Miss USA embodies all of the qualities of the total woman; beautiful, confident, personable, intelligent, capable, socially aware and excellent speakers with integrity. I have heard that it is more likely that your son will play in the NFL than your daughter will compete at Miss USA, so winning is still surreal for me!

What do you miss about North Carolina now that you live in California?

I miss my family! I am super close with my younger sister, Julia, and I’m always so sad for a few days after I leave her :-( When I’m home, I love baking with my mom and sisters, going to the beach, catching a show at our Performing Arts Hall and family game night!

What do you like about modeling for Karen Kane?

I was familiar with Karen Kane from seeing it in stores and I owned a few of her tank tops! All of the clothes are so soft, well-made, and stylish!

What are your favorite Karen Kane items that you have modeled?

I love all of her tank tops! They are such a great fit and come in all the colors of the rainbow! I also just modeled a pair of red and turquoise skinny pants that were so cute and fit perfectly!

What do you like doing for fun in Los Angeles?

For fun, I love hiking Fryman or Runyon Canyon, trying new restaurants, going to church, wine and game nights with my friends, bike riding, trying new fitness classes, and the occasional night out on the town!

How would you describe your personal sense of style?

Boho chic. If I had to pick a celebrity my style most emulated, it would probably be Jessica Alba. Easy, flowy, stylish, and soft.

We just had our Summer 2012 photo shoot with Kristen so you can look forward to seeing more of her this upcoming season on KarenKane.com! You can follow her on Twitter at @KristenJDalton and find her on Facebook here.

This year, Karen Kane partnered with the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising to present an exciting project to the school’s 3rd year Advanced Design Students. Longing to update the classic “little black dress,” Karen challenged each student to come up with their own modern interpretation of the style for Fall 2012. The prize? The winning student’s design would be added to the Karen Kane collection and sold in stores this upcoming fall. Needless to say, the excited students got to work quickly.

Over the course of 9 months, each of the 10 students sketched out ideas, presented them to Karen, and worked with her on executing their designs. They produced patterns, made samples, and worked with Karen to fit them on a model. After getting feedback from Karen, each designer revised their dresses and prepped them for their big runway premiere at FIDM’s annual Debut Gala. After the dresses made their appearance on the runway (watch the show below!), Karen announced the winner – and to everyone’s surprise – she picked three winning designs! Congratulations to the winners of the Karen Kane Little Black Dress Challenge – First Place: Joshua Christensen, Second Place: Tracy Moore, and Third Place: Wensi Gao. We can’t wait to see the dresses when they come out this upcoming Fall – look for them at a store near you!
