Spotted: Karen in the desert!

Kelly Lee of KellyGolightly wore the Karen Kane Doheny Drive Sleeveless Shirt (2L28182) while she ventured into the desert. Kelly paired the shirt with distressed jeans and pumps, one of many fabulous ways to wear this top. Read the full post at her site.

Haunted Hiking

With Halloween happening mid-week this year, I felt like celebrating in a more low key manner than usual. My friends recently got some new camping equipment so it was perfect timing to get into the Halloween spirit with a camping trip! Some of you might be thinking, what does camping have to do with Halloween?! Let’s see, leaves falling on the trees, telling ghost stories by the camp fire, and eating too many sweets (nobody can resist having just one s’more!). The trip was definitely festive in spirit.

We travelled north from Los Angeles and within two hours arrived at our camping destination, Bear Campground. I was reassured that no bears lived nearby, but I was a bit skeptic. Did they just pull the name out of thin air? Nevertheless, there were no run-ins with bears and the weather turned out to be beautiful. We hiked, played card games, and simply enjoyed nature. Check out the gigantic pine cone we found on the side of the road as well as the pictures from our hike!

Start Me Up in Seattle

Seattle is hands down one of my favorite places to visit! I am originally from Oregon so travelling to the Northwest always reminds me coming home and spending time with family. The city itself is unbelievably beautiful, the people are friendly and the weather is… well the weather isn’t exactly ideal but a few rainy days here and there never hurt anybody. Right?

My schedule was filled with store visits but I did get the opportunity to take in some of the scenery. I found a great coffee spot near my hotel and the space needle was actually close by as well! Below are some pictures from my trip.

In addition to the fantastic cup of coffee easily attainable in Seattle I also realized while driving and listening to the radio that the music is distinctively Northwestern. If you’ve never been to the area, I understand that might be a hard thought to follow. Let’s just say I’ve never heard more Rolling Stones on the radio then I did on this trip! Below is my Seattle play list, for those of you interested in getting into a Seattle state of mind.

Here’s my Seattle play list…

One Hand in My Pocket- Alanis Morrisette

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction- Rolling Stones

You Say- Lisa Loeb

I’m the Only One- Melissa Etheridge

Semi Charmed Life- Third Eye Blind

Free Fallin- Tom Petty

Tonight, Tonight- Smashing Pumpkins

Wonderful Tonight- Eric Clapton

Mysterious Ways- U2

Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana

Hot Child in the Desert

My travels this week took me to Palm Desert. The area is a bit more than one hundred miles east of Los Angeles, but it feels like a whole other world. One of the most interesting things about California is that there are so many different climates within the state, it’s easy to find interesting places to travel. The Palm Desert/Palm Springs area is known for it’s phenomenal spas and golf courses, which makes for a relaxing vibe within the community. During the Spring and Winter, it’s as if everyone in the area has dodged harsher climates to vacation in the desert. Picture yourself wearing golf shorts and a polo shirt, linen pants with a linen tank, white capri’s and a colorful top or a caftan by the pool and you might be ready to take the journey to Palm Desert!

As I drive from LA to the desert, the scenery becomes increasingly beautiful and the temperature starts to increase. It’s not unusual to leave LA at 65 degrees and arrive to the desert at 95 degrees! With Fall in full swing, I’m ready for boots and a cozy sweater, but these seasonal basics are just not an option in the desert.

This week, however, I was determined to wear Fall fashion! For those of you in similar hot climates, I’m going to pass on my outfit tips that helped me achieve the look of fall in wear now materials. During my visit, I felt comfortable, ready for fall, and confident that I wasn’t going to pass out from heat exhaustion in my outfit.

Tunic: I gravitate towards black, but it’s definitely not the best option for hot weather. I like that this Karen Kane grey python print tunic is neutral yet not to much of a departure from black. Try to find light neutrals to replace black. Also light knits are key. This top is not too thick and not once was I hot in long sleeves!!!

Legging: This is quickly becoming one of my favorite items in my wardrobe, it’s so soft on! What’s nice about this Karen Kane legging is that it’s thin but not see through. A substantial legging is key for the season and an item that will guaranteed get a lot of use.

Flats: Even though I’m dying to get into boots, it’s still too hot to make the transition. A nice pair of flats is a great option in this case.

Windmills are everywhere on the drive to Palm Desert.

Here’s the Palms and Desert all in one pic!

Hubby Happy Hour

It’s very easy to take “date night” for granted before the arrival of kids into the family dynamic. Because let’s face it, every night really is date night, it just depends if you are spending time with your significant other “in” or “out”.

The hubs and I try to do date night or even date afternoon once a week, or at the very least twice a month. On Friday, we snuck in a quick Happy Hour date  and split some nachos and one (okay two) margaritas at one of our favorite spots in Boca, Rocco’s Tacos. The 1/2 nachos are only 5 bucks, and soooooo delicious. It’s the perfect appetizer for two: satisfies the craving, but doesn’t fill you up for dinner.

Conversation between me and the hubs every time we go to Rocco’s:

Hubs: “What’s this?” (points to menu) … I am of Colombian descent so he figures I can translate
Me: “Cojita. It’s a mild white cheese. You ask me this EVERY time we eat here.” note: we’ve dined at Rocco’s at least 6 times now

For our “date night” I wore my new Karen Kane striped tie front top (3K77155 on-line if you dig it and want to check it out). I paired it with a black Karen Kane jean (like these) and gold jewelry. I felt comfy and well dressed for our rainy Friday date!

There are a few Rocco’s locations in South Florida, so if you’re ever in the area and looking for some great inexpensive Mexican food, look them up! You won’t be disappointed.

Bright Lights, Big Shine!

One of my favorite stores to visit is the Dillard’s in Las Vegas. I usually fly in for the day, work with some of the nicest associates and customers, and then return home to Los Angeles. This week, my visit was no exception. I had a great time outfitting shoppers!

Dressing in Vegas allows for a departure from my usual style. Even if I’m not in for a night out on the Strip; it’s fun to “play Vegas” with a chic and glitzy outfit. If you think about it, people that get lucky and win a million dollars at a casino are never wearing a pant suit! Instead they dress for success in a shiny sequin look.

Check out my Vegas look this week (the Strip looks much more impressive at night so close your eyes and use your imagination). Sequins aren’t just for Holiday parties these days. Who knows, maybe a casual sequin top will help me win big!
