Collections and Cocktails

So Spring 2013 market is finally over at the Karen Kane showroom. No more back-to-back appointments, sample rack scavenging, or belated blog posts. All-in-all we believe the market show was a huge success!

Buyer’s from all over the country came in to see the Spring 2013 line and many raved about Karen’s congruence with trend.  Our colored lace bodies, which flowed from month-to-month received much applause, as did our multitude of spring dresses (including a new LBD package that every girl must have in her closet). Our dabble in peplum gained popularity as did our printed pants, various motorcycle jackets, and new wrinkle-resistant travel fabrication.

We finished off market “week” (I use parenthesis because it really spans the course of three), with a cocktail party for one of Karen Kane’s nationwide accounts, Macy’s. The party, planned by our very own Assistant Account Executive, Sydney, was huge success! Our own retail merchandising Director, Shawn, came up with the fabulous idea; and her delightful husband, Michael, offered up his professional bartending skills for the event. He even developed two specialty cocktails, the Macy’s Margarita and the Cucumber Gimlet, for which we’ve provided recipes below:

Macy’s Margarita:

- 1 shot Patron Silver tequila

- 1 shot St. Germain

- 1/4 grapefruit, juice squeezed fresh

- Ice (fill to top of glass)

- Sour Mix

- Drop Agave syrup

- Salt (for rim)

Mix all drink ingredients in shaker w/ice. Pour over fresh ice in salted margarita glass. Garnish w/fresh slice of grapefruit.

Cucumber Gimlet:

- 2 shots Bombay Sapphire gin

- 1/4 cup muddled cucumber

- 1 lime, fresh squeezed

- 1/4 cup simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)

- Ice (fill to top of glass)

Mix all drink ingredients in shaker w/ice. Pour over fresh ice in tall Collins glass. Garnish w/fresh slice of cucumber.

The hors devours spread at the cocktail party. Yum!

Fall is Football Season…

So school is finally back in session and just like magic in the northeast, it already feels like Fall. The coolness of the nights, the need for a sweatshirt on the weekend mornings, and the start of the football season is here.

This past Sunday before we headed out of the house to my son’s first football game of the year, he requested 2 waffles, fruit and bacon. He said, “I need to eat a lot so I can have energy on the field.” At almost 8 years old I can assure you he always has energy – I just wish I could borrow a bit sometimes!

After a hearty breakfast Jack got dressed in his uniform and looked so proud. I stood back and could not believe how big he had gotten (the padding adds quite a lot also). As a Mom, I was nervous for him as I  do not want him to get hurt, but this is something he really wanted to do and practiced for all summer.

So off we went in the car and on the way he asked me to play some “rock” on the radio. This gave me a chuckle and I played some Katy Perry (one of his favorites but clearly not what I would term rock; I mean, I grew up in the 80′s ACDC is rock!).  He sang the whole way to the game and was so excited to get on the field and play.

His team did well and they shut out their opponents.  When the game was over and he came off the field he ran and gave me a huge hug and said, “that was so fun!” Then my little boy asked if he could take off his padding and go play on the playground. I sighed a sense of relief the game was over and happily watched him climb and swing.

I know being a parent is the toughest job anyone can do, and I also know it is the most rewarding, amazing gift to watch your kids grow up. So week one of football is down and this Mom has survived!

Jack in his uniform, ready to play!

With the cousins, about to hit the playground.

Juggling Family

Although a week behind, I just had to share this weekend story….

This last Labor Day weekend I was fortunate enough to start it off with my family in NYC! I started my Friday late afternoon with a delicious meal with my husband Sean and two boys James and Jack at Bryant Park Grill. We are a seafood loving family and ate some tasty mussels, lobster, clams and tuna!  We then walked through the park and stumbled upon a free juggling demonstration. It was really fun to watch my husband and older son James try and juggle balls and bowling pins! More ended up on the ground than in the air but it was quite entertaining! Next, we headed down Broadway and stopped and had a true NY tradition, a Mr. Softy ice cream cone. Lots of napkins later, we arrived at Radio City Music Hall to see the final weekend showing of the Cirque Du Soleil show, Zarkana.  The show really was spectacular! We all were amazed at the talent the performers had and how flexible they were. After the show, and deciding it had been a long day, we jumped in a pedicab and headed back to Port Authority to get our bus home to NJ. Overall, it was a great way to spend some time with my men and soak up some NYC fun!
